Why we verify
Anyone can type a review. What makes BeforeJob useful is knowing that the person who wrote it actually worked there. So before you write a review, salary, layoff report or appraisal report about a company, we check that you work or worked at it.
Verification proves where you worked, not who you are. We do not ask for your name, and nothing about your verification is shown except a short badge.
Three ways to verify
Pick whichever is easiest for you. All three lead to the same badge.
Work email
Current employees whose company email domain we know.
- 1Enter your work email address.
- 2We send a 6-digit code to that inbox.
- 3Enter the code. You are verified in a minute.
What we read: Only the domain of the address, to match it to the company.
EPF passbook
Current and former employees of companies that pay into EPF.
- 1Download your passbook from the EPFO member passbook site.
- 2Upload the PDF or a clear screenshot.
- 3We check the establishment name and your service dates.
What we read: The establishment name, your date of joining and, if you have left, your date of exit.
Payslip or offer letter
Anyone, including people at companies without EPF or with an unknown email domain.
- 1Upload one recent payslip, or your offer or appointment letter.
- 2You may cover your PAN, bank account and salary figures first.
- 3We check the company name, the date and that the document looks genuine.
What we read: The company name, the month or date on the document, and signs of editing.
What we read, keep and delete
What we read
An automated check reads your document to find the employer name and the dates that show whether you work there now, and for how long. It also looks for signs that the document was edited. If the check is unsure, a person on our verification team looks at it. Nobody else ever sees it.
What we keep
- the company and the method you used;
- whether you are a current or former employee;
- your tenure band: under 1 year, 1 to 3 years, 3 to 5 years, or over 5 years;
- coarse start and end months, which are never shown publicly;
- for work email, a one-way fingerprint of the address, never the address itself.
What we delete, and when
- The uploaded document is deleted as soon as we decide, and never kept more than 72 hours after upload.
- Email codes expire within minutes and are stored only as a hash.
- We never keep your name, PAN, UAN, salary figures or bank details from a document.
Your verification record is deleted or anonymised when you delete your account. The privacy policy lists everything we keep and for how long.
How anonymity works
Verification tells us you worked somewhere. These protections make sure it can never tell anyone which contribution is yours.
Separate keys
Your account and your contributions are stored in separate records. Contributions carry a pseudonymous key made with a secret held only on our servers, never your name, phone or account id.
Random 1 to 7 day delay
Reviews, salaries, interviews and reports go live at a random time between 1 and 7 days after you submit, so nobody can match the timing to you.
No groups under 5 people
We never show a breakdown by department, location, role or level with fewer than 5 contributions, and no salary range for a role with fewer than 3 entries.
Month and year only
Public pages show when something was posted as a month and year, never an exact date or time.
A different name at every company
In discussions you appear under a pseudonym that is different at each company, so your activity cannot be followed across BeforeJob.
What your badge shows
Each contribution shows one badge: whether you are a current or former employee, and a tenure band. Hovering over it shows the method used. It never shows your job start date, your exact role or your team, unless you choose to write them in the contribution.
Questions people ask
If your question is not here, ask the Grievance Officer through the grievance page.
Will my employer know that I wrote a review?
No. Employers see the review and its badge, like everyone else. They never see your name, phone number, email or verification document, and nobody at BeforeJob will tell them. Avoid details that only you could know, because your own words are the one thing we cannot hide.
Can BeforeJob staff see who wrote a contribution?
Contribution records do not hold your name, phone number or account id, so our moderators see the contribution and its badge, not the account behind it. If a court or an authorised agency sends a lawful order, we must follow it, and we share only what the order covers.
Why does my review not appear straight away?
Every review, salary, interview, layoff report and appraisal report goes live after a random delay of 1 to 7 days. If it appeared the moment you submitted, someone watching the page could connect it to the time you were online. Discussion posts and comments appear immediately because they are conversations.
What happens to my document after verification?
We delete the file as soon as we make a decision, and never keep it more than 72 hours after upload. We keep only the result: the company, the method, whether you are a current or former employee, your tenure band and coarse start and end months.
Is it safe to upload my EPF passbook or payslip?
We only need the employer name and dates. You can cover your PAN, UAN, bank account and salary figures before uploading. The document is read by an automated check, and by a person on our verification team only if that check is unsure. It is never shown to employers or other users.
My work email does not work. What can I do?
Some companies use several email domains, and we may not know all of them yet. Verify with your EPF passbook or a payslip instead, which work for every company. If your company is missing from BeforeJob altogether, you can request it while starting a review.
I have left the company. Can I still verify?
Yes. Use your EPF passbook, which shows your date of exit, or an old payslip or offer letter. Your contributions will carry a Verified former employee badge.
Do I need to verify to share an interview experience?
No. Candidates are not employees, so interview experiences do not need employment verification. They are labelled as coming from an interview candidate.
Can one work email verify more than one account?
No. We keep a one-way fingerprint of each verified work email, so the same inbox cannot be used to verify a second account. We never keep the address itself.
Do I have to verify again?
Verifications as a current employee are rechecked once a year, so badges stay accurate. Former employee verifications do not expire.
What if my verification is rejected?
Usually the document was unclear, the company name did not match, or the dates were missing. Try again with a clearer file or another method. If you think we made a mistake, raise a grievance under My account and a person will look at it.
